A BRIEF GUIDE TO
THE USE CLASSES ORDER 1987 (AS AMENDED 2005)
Use Classes define various categories of
property. Change of use within a particular
category does not normally require planning
permission and planning permission may not
be needed for closely related changes including:
A3 to A2 or A1
A2 to A1
A3 to A1 or A2
A4 to A1, A2 or A3
A5 to A1, A2 or A3
B2 to B1 or B8 (subject to a limitation on size)
B2 to B1 (unlimited)
B2 to B8 (subject to a limitation on size)
B8 to B1 (subject to a limitation on size)
These changes are controlled by the General Development
Order. The provisions of this legislation
are complex and there are exceptions. For
example, restrictions on change of use may
apply in conservation areas.
Change of use within a particular Use Class is
normally permitted but do take professional
advice.
Previously permitted changes of use from the Sui Generis uses are no longer permitted.
